The trauma.
The depression.
The addiction.
The grief.
The homelessness.
The moments that shape a life long before anyone notices.
That’s The Pretty Ugly.
It’s the understanding that every person has a story beyond what the world can see.
I know this because I’ve lived through it.
As a child, I experienced domestic violence that eventually led me to leave home at sixteen. I spent time staying with friends, family, and eventually living out of my car. I battled depression and addiction while trying to find my place in the world. Looking back, I realized something that changed my life. The struggle didn’t begin with homelessness. The struggle didn’t begin with addiction. The struggle didn’t begin with suicide. It began with identity. With believing things about myself that were never meant to define me. That’s why I often say: The suicide happens before the suicide. Long before a crisis, there are silent battles that people carry every single day. Battles with shame. Fear. Loneliness. Self-worth. Belonging. Those are the battles we rarely see. Today, I share my lived experience through storytelling because stories have the power to restore what trauma tried to take away. Every keynote. Every workshop. Every conversation. Every young person we serve… …is an opportunity to remind someone that they are far more than the hardest chapter of their life. My story was never meant to end with survival. It was meant to become someone else’s beginning. Because when we learn to see beyond the “pretty”… We begin to understand the “ugly.” And when we understand the “ugly”… Healing becomes possible. That understanding led to a promise.
